A map of the Kahili preserve was provided for the group, identifying the boundaries of the preserve as well as the appropriate boundaries for conducting the activity.
Students were asked to go find a spot somewhere in the reserve to sit by themselves and write a reflection piece of what they see, smell, hear and feel about where they are. They can write a poem, draw a picture, write a letter to their parents or a message to a friend. Students for example can choose a plant, animal, feeling or thought or even reflect on the landscape. The idea is that they capture something that uniquely identifies them with place.

The trees are calling my name.
It smells very good near the trees.
The blue sky is fighting the grey sky; the grey sky brought reinforcements from the ocean.
The wind is trying to blow little ants and bugs off their feet.
The trees are dancing with the wind.
The grass is swaying in the breeze.
The water is wobbling in the wind.
The ocean is rising and crashing because it is mad at the sun for evaporating it and the wind is on the sun’s side.
The sun is blazing and the birds are chirping.

In the sky I see the shift in the clouds from white and blue to dark grey.
I hear the ocean wind in the trees.
In front of me I see the calm river blue and green.
I can hear all my classmates talking behind me.
I feel the squishy water and sand between my toes.
The sunshine beams on me.
I see the fish in the river.
