Barbara Wiedner: Surfrider Foundation
The Surfrider Foundation’s mission reads; “The Surfrider Foundation is a non-profit environmental organization dedicated to the protection and enjoyment of the world’s oceans, waves and beaches for all people, through conservation, activism, research and education.” Tuesday April 24, Barbara Weinder of the Surfrider Foundation came into the 7th grade classroom to discuss the impacts of Marine Debris on the environment. Not only is it aesthetically displeasing, its biological impacts are immense as animals ingest it; Plastic is pesky, buoyant, and consistent.
The number one type of Marine Debris on our Island is fishing nets. Sea Life including turtles, seals, and whales can become entangled in these human created products. Surfrider has a “net patrol” where citizens may contact the Surfrider Foundation if they see a net on the beach and the organization will come and remove it. Barbara brought in a mat that was actually created from old fishing nets to create awareness. Students discussed their power in choice as a consumer to make informed decisions about the products they purchase. Did you know that a plastic bottle takes 450 years to decompose? Island School thanks “Aunty Barbara” for coming into the classroom and for her dedication and commitment to educational awareness and keeping our beaches clean.
