Group Discussion on Management Challenges
Dr. Vlautin asked students, “ How can we come up with a way to protect Nene in areas in a way that does not affect people’s enjoyment of it?”
Students split into groups and played conservationists and community members. They listed their concerns and then as a whole students discussed solutions to these problems. Dr Vlautin told students, “you can agree with a side, but you have to understand both.” Also, “ Solutions always involve education; People must be on board with the solution.”
Students suggestions included informing citizens and tourists with informational videos, signs, and media included at the airport and on the airplane showing the Nene Goose biology including behaviors and natural habitats. Citizens would become more conscientious. They also suggested teaching and allowing citizens a non-intrusive acceptable way to shooe the bird if they come too close.
